MERA Session Controller Now Enhanced with Smart Routing and Bandwidth Management Tools

December 9, 2003

Toronto, ON, Canada — December 8, 2003 — MERA Systems, Inc., a key provider of full-featured session controllers, today announced the release of its MVTS session controller v.2.1.7. The new version is enhanced with smart routing and bandwidth management tools. Taken together, these features add to the system reliability, boost efficiency, and optimize peering relationships of IP carriers.

The MERA VoIP Transit Softswitch (MVTS) is an award-winning session controller deployed as the focal point of VoIP networks. The MVTS offers a full set of features needed by service providers to deliver mission-critical quality to their customers and ensure profit-generating peering with partner networks. The sophisticated routing and traffic transfer capabilities of the MERA solution allow ITSPs to dramatically improve their operational efficiency and increase traffic flow, and it is no accident that these features have become the key theme of the new v.2.1.7 release.

"As IP Telephony gains recognition in today's communication world and networks get more crowded, reliability and Quality of Service become the main battlefields of competition between service providers," says Natalya Korobkova, Marketing Director, MERA Systems, Inc. "We anticipate carriers' most urgent needs, and have addressed them in our recent MVTS developments. The smart routing and bandwidth control tools will give MVTS-enabled carriers the extra power to efficiently manage peering relations and maintain competitive quality of service."

Smart routing is a flexible mechanism that allows service providers to control the quality and availability of route paths. Based on traffic data estimates, which are updated every 30 seconds, routes are analyzed for passability and are blocked if their average success rate (ASR) falls below a preset value. The period for which a route use is suspended as well as the conditions which re-open it for traffic, can be configured by the system administrator. After the out-of-use period expires, the route is checked again, and if the ASR is acceptable it can be regained. Smart routing is a safeguard against sudden drops in call completion rate and a perfect complement to the internal static and RADIUS-aided dynamic routing engines of the MVTS session controller.

Bandwidth management. The 2.1.7 release is enhanced with an effective load balancing mechanism that allows bandwidth assignments to the carrier's links. Each local IP address can be configured for a certain maximum bandwidth value for ingress and egress traffic. Every 30 seconds the MVTS checks the links for traffic flow and canalizes additional load to those with sufficient bandwidth. This capability ensures efficient use of the network capacity and eliminates packet loss due to bottlenecks caused by link overloads, thus adding to the overall performance of the system.

This functionality was requested by InterDnestrCom, a Moldavia-based full-service telco. "The MERA session controller is a reliable system that allows us to run an efficient and profitable network", says Yuri Pozdnyakov, CEO, InterDnestrCom. "The just-implemented load balancing tool will enable us to manage multimedia flows across IP interconnections and safeguard against channel congestions and sudden drops in route quality. Another important enhancement is the possibility to handle traffic that exceeds bandwidth allocations — in such cases calls can be re-routed to the least-busy path, to a default link, or terminated. Bandwidth control provides us with a level of flexibility, with which we can optimize the use of network resources, improve service and deliver added value to our clientele."
