MERA Offers NAT/Firewall Traversal Solution

June 11, 2004

Toronto, ON, Canada — June 11, 2004 — MERA Systems, Inc., a key manufacturer of reliable VoIP solutions, today released its brand-new MERA NAT Traversal system designed to ensure connectivity of carrier-grade equipment with customer endpoints located behind a corporate firewall or a NAT router. MERA NAT Traversal is an add-on module for the MVTS session controller that enables all MVTS users to easily and cost-effectively interconnect with corporate customers located behind firewalls and NAT routers.

The core purpose of firewalls is to protect the company's network from other networks to which it is connected by admitting only select packets that come from the outside. At the same time, firewalls present a problem for VoIP because they are intrinsically suspicious of any traffic originating from the 'un-trusted' side and hinder the end-to-end IP routability. NAT devices also prevent two-way voice and multimedia communication. They are capable of reading only the IP header of VoIP packets, whereas the private IP addresses and ports of IP phones are embedded both within the IP header and the VoIP protocol.

MERA NAT Traversal is just the right software utility that provides a truly cost-effective solution to the challenge. MERA NAT Traversal is a Windows-based application supportive of both H.323 and SIP that overcomes the typical NAT/Firewall challenges by providing a single pinhole in the firewall for all traffic that goes in and out of the corporate LAN. It consists of two functional parts — a control unit and a switching unit. The control unit is a decision-making element combined with a database and a Web user interface for the application administration. The switching unit is deployed on the enterprise LAN behind a NAT/firewall device and serves as a single entry/exit point for all inbound and outbound IPT traffic.

The MERA NAT/Firewall Traversal utility offers a number of important benefits to VoIP carriers:

MERA Nat/Firewall Traversal System is supplied FREE OF CHARGE with the MVTS session controller. It is immediately available for all MVTS users and can be downloaded at http://www.mera-systems.com/en/download/.
