MERA Announces Security Update of Its MVTS Session Controller

Toronto, ON, Canada — 12 August 2004 — MERA Systems, a forefront supplier of full-featured VoIP solutions for carriers and service providers, today announced a major security enhancement of its MVTS session controller. The update serves to cope up with a security threat to VoIP networks discovered in Cisco IOS.

The recent Cisco IOS releases contain modifications to the call originator parameter that now displays the IP address of the endpoint from which the call was made. This information so easily available, it can be used to uncover the structure of a carrier's network and access other sensitive information, including customer-related details.

MERA has solved the security problem by updating its MVTS session controller with a special network protection algorithm. The algorithm denies output of the originator IP address and thus keeps the carrier's network safe and secure. Along with the network protection, the updated MVTS Session Controller ensures seamless interworking of IOS-based gateways with other VoIP equipment.

The updated version of the MVTS is immediately available for all MVTS users.

About the MVTS session controller
The MVTS is a session controller of the new generation that serves as the 'brain' of a VoIP network and provides carriers with everything they need to deliver real-time multimedia communications directly across IP links. The key functionalities of the MVTS include smart routing, session control, detailed call statistics and CDRs, SIP/H.323 interworking and many more. The intelligent, policy-based routing engine allows carriers to generate the maximum profit from their networks. Based on a set of pre-defined rules and policies, the routing engine automatically switches between the available route paths, choosing the best route both in terms of quality and pricing. The SIP-HIT, an ingenious converter of protocols and codecs, gives VoIP service providers an equally easy access to both SIP and H.323 domains. Furthermore, the recently released NAT Traversal module enables the MVTS to interconnect with customer SIP and H.323 endpoints deployed behind the corporate NAT/firewalls.
